ArmorPanel™ is the trademarked name for a new soft-sided hurricane protection fabric panel manufactured by NBI Corporation. What sets ArmorPanel™ apart from other fabric protection products is the use of DuPont KEVLAR® as an essential component in the manufacturing process. DuPont KEVLAR® material is an organic fiber in the aromatic polyamide (aramid) family. It has high strength, high modulus (stiffness), toughness and thermal stability. ArmorPanel™ and the grommet hardware used to install the fabric panels have passed Non-HVHZ (High Velocity Hurricane Zone) testing for approval under the current Florida Building Code guidelines.

The fabric panels are designed and engineered to protect glazing systems from the hazards of flying debris generated by powerful hurricane storm winds. The basic objectives of the ArmorPanel™ hurricane protection system is to provide a reasonable and substantial level of protection that is very affordable, easy to install, and can be subsequently deployed quickly with minimal effort by most owners young or old.

ArmorPanel™ hurricane panels provide the following additional benefits over other metal shutter-type products:

  • Translucent, allowing diffused light to enter the home or building
  • Flame retardant, UV inhibitors and anti-mold and mildew inhibitors added
  • Better appearance - no visible exterior housing tracks
  • Storage and handling – lightweight; no sharp edges; can lay flat or roll-up
  • Easy to put-up, and take-down
  • Easy to clean and corrosion resistant
  • Can be imprinted (Address, Insurance Info, Opening Location, etc.)

It should be noted that while the ArmorPanel™ fabric product can be virtually impenetrable by wind-blown debris, the system may not prevent glass breakage behind the panel from occurring. Glass breakage may occur as a result of the amount of deflection or “give” when the debris strikes the panel forcing it inward to the glass surface. In the instance of glass breakage, the ArmorPanel™ system will still provide a barrier for wind and water entering the premises. However, consumers may want to consider the additional application of 3M Safety Film to provide an extra level of protection against possible glass breakage.
